Reasons
The reason for slave codes was to try and stop slave rebellions. Slaves would rebel against their masters and to try to take over and get their freedom. Since more and more slaves were coming in, there could be more and stronger uprisings. The belief was that slave codes would stop or lessen most rebellions. The more slaves that came the more slave codes were created.
Examples
There were many slave codes. For example, one code said that slaves were not to learn how to read and write. Another stated that slaves could not own their own property, and they had to have a white person with them at all time. In addition, the slaves that did not live on the plantations where they worked had curfews.
